DISPLAYS AND LIGHTING DRIVING LED MARKET GROWTH

LEDs in  LIGHTING CONFERENCE  TRACK

Friday, September 30 14:10--14:50
Japanese Lighting Designer Perspective

This presentation will discuss the outlook for LED lighting based on the achievements to date of architectural lighting using LEDs. It will also propose that safe, attractive and small light sources will enable the future of lighting for human beings.

Designing the Retrofit Bulb

The need for energy efficient, robust, long-lived lighting solutions has never been greater. Globally, LED bulb adoption has increased substantially over the last year. Even with the high demand and dropping prices for LEDs, designing a high performance, cost effective retrofit bulb is very challenging. Additionally, there are a many different bulb types including omnidirectional, directional and decorative.  A thorough understanding of the LED, thermal system, optical design and driver size/efficiency is needed to successfully enter this market.  This presentation will cover the fundamental system design challenges and tradeoffs needed to make low-cost, high-performance LED retrofit bulbs.

Quality of Light for LED Illumination

Illumination design using LED light sources has recently become common. However only energy saving and long life are emphasized and less attention is paid to the quality of light. This presentation explains the unique issues of LED light sources in terms of quality of light and how to achieve good quality of illumination using LED light sources.

SPEAKER:
Noboru Kaito
Representative Director, Director of Business Development
Xicato Japan  K. K.

Noboru Kaito joined Hewlitt-Packard Japan (later Agilent Technologies Japan) and later moved to Lumileds Lighting (now Philips Lumileds Lighting). He held an R&D manager position in The Netherlands for three years. He established Xicato Japan K.K. when Xicato began doing business in Japan in 2009.

New Technologies: Light Recording and Playback

Today solid state lighting has begun replacing vacuum lighting in many applications. While there is still work to be done, particularly in reducing cost, there is little doubt SSL will become the dominant form of electric lighting in years to come. If history is any guide, simply replacing the existing vacuum technology with a new solid state technology will not be the end point. In addition to high efficacy and long life, LEDs allow much greater control of the visible spectrum for fun and profit. One application is the record and playback of illumination events such as a sunrise-to-sunset recording of daylight and the actual reproduction of a candle flame. This talk will briefly review famous replicators in history and explain the current activities in light recording. Finally, a playback demonstration of existing light recordings will be provided.

SPEAKER:
Steve Paolini
CEO
Telelumen

Steve Paolini joined Hewlett Packard's Optoelectronics Division in 1981. There he held a variety of engineering and management positions in California, Japan, and Malaysia. In 2000 he joined Lumileds and held management positions in IP, Business Development, and Product Development. In 2007 he founded Telelumen LLC, where he is currently the CEO. In 2009 he added the responsibility of CTO at Lunera Lighting Inc. Steve often speaks at conferences and universities on a variety of topics relating to LEDs and holds four issued patents.

New Technologies: Flexible Graphite -- Solutions for SSL
Thermal Management

The emergence of solid-state lighting has highlighted the need for improved thermal management solutions. Flexible graphite is now used as either a thermal interface material (TIM) or as an advanced heat spreader. Flexible graphite TIM outperforms messy thermal greases and does not dry out. Flexible graphite heat spreaders enable lower junction temperatures and longer LED lifetimes in both new and retrofit luminaire designs. This presentation will explain the benefits of anisotropic ultra-high thermal conductivity material for SSL applications.

SPEAKER:
Stanley Hsiao
Applications Engineer
Graftech International Holdings

Stanley Hsiao received his undergraduate degree in Mechanical Engineering from National Tsing Hua University (Taiwan) and his master’s degree, also in Mechanical Engineering, from National Taiwan University (Taiwan). In industry, Stanley successfully developed server/storage systems including a 2U, 8-processor system. He currently works at GrafTech International as an applications engineer, specializing in flexible graphite thermal management solutions for the consumer electronics industry.
